Institute of Export - Venture forth with wisdom

Welcome to the Northern Ireland Institute of Export

The world is in your hands

The Institute of Export was established in 1935 and is incorporated as a Registered Charity. The mission of the Institute is “to enhance the export performance of the United Kingdom by setting and raising professional standards in international trade management and export practice”. This is principally achieved by the provision of education and training programmes.

The Institute of Export is the only professional body in the U.K. offering recognised, formal qualifications in International Trade. The Institute’s professional qualifications, achieved by examination, lead to the award of the Diploma in International Trade, which confers Graduate membership of the Institute and the entitlement to use the suffix MIEx (Grad).

The world is changing and we have to change with it. The recent accession of ten new member states to the EU creates both challenges as well as opportunities. Within this new single market there is intense competition in all sectors of industry and commerce. To remain successful, companies will have to learn how to become effective competitors and this in turn means that companies will require more and more from their staff.

We need as a trading nation to produce every year, a constant supply of people who are knowledgeable of all the different facets of exporting. We believe that the Institute’s qualifications will prepare companies well for the years ahead.

In the late 1960’s, a number of Northern Ireland businessmen, united by connection with the export industry and membership of the Institute of Export, felt that there was sufficient interest in Northern Ireland for their own branch.

With the help of the Institute Head Office, then in Hallam Place, and support from the new members, the branch was incorporated in 1969 under the first chairman, Mr. Cyril Corfield of Goodyear.

The basic organisation was set up and rapidly extended, particularly in the areas of education and social activities. Awards were instituted and a firm contact with the Republic of Ireland was opened and has to this day remained an important part of the branches interest.

Many of our founder members, happily, are still with us, both in an active capacity and as retired members, membership steadily increased and credit is greatly due to the present generation of officers and members whose enthusiasm and support ensures the future of the Branch.
